Access to prior scientific works and technical information is key to the emergence of new scientific knowledge and innovation (Moser and Biasi 2018, Nagler et al. 2019).

In the Newtonian sense of "giants on whose shoulders [s]he could look so far", knowledge generation in science is best characterized by a cumulative process that heavily relies and benefits from the work of other researchers. However, access to academic publications is particularly problematic for scientists based in developing economies that often lack the necessary resources. The Research4Life initiative led by several United Nations agencies wants to change this situation. New empirical research by Cuntz et al. (2024) suggests a positive impact on local science and innovation from improved access to scientific information via the initiative.
